Braden Hartley had three hits and three RBIs, Eddie Burkhardt drove in a pair of runs and the Rochester Warriors cruised past the visiting Tenino Beavers, 13-3, in a non-league, inter-classification matchup.
Rochester got to Tenino early, plating eight runs in the bottom of the second to take full control. After adding one in the fourth and conceding a pair of runs in the fifth, the Warriors netted four sixth-inning runs to earn the mercy-rule walkoff.
Drew Hart and Kellen Knox each had a pair of hits for the Beavers and Brody Noonan drove in a run for the Beavers, as well.
Tate Quarnstrom was outstanding for Rochester, tossing 5.0 innings with six strikeouts. Warriors reliever Jyson O’Conner tossed the final inning cleanly. Neither Rochester hurler walked a single Beaver.
“We didn’t play great defense again tonight, but luckily we scored enough runs,” Rochester coach Brad Quarnstrom said.
Rochester (2-2) visits Centralia on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Tenino (0-3) hosts La Center on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
A memorable seventh inning saw the W.F. West Bearcats walk-off the visiting Tumwater Thunderbirds, 2-1, in a 2A Evergreen Conference baseball game.
W.F. West maintained the 1-1 tie in the top of seventh, utilizing a double-cut to nab the T-Bird runner at the plate, setting up the wild bottom half of the frame.
There, Drew Reynolds led off with a double after a “great at-bat,” Bearcats coach Bryan Bullock said. Unfortunately, Reynolds promptly got picked off at second base, changing the situation from the winning run in scoring position to the bases cleared with one out. That’s a huge swing.
“We could’ve easily just hung our heads, but we found a way to get the job done,” Bullock said.
But the Bearcats didn’t relent, didn’t hang their heads, didn’t give up. Kolby Hansen worked a two-out walk, bringing up Brit Lusk with a chance to win the game.
Lusk sent a scorcher into the gap, and it was nearly run down in the outfield with a dive. But it bounced off the tip of the glove and rolled away, giving Hansen, who was running on contact with two outs, time enough to round third and score the winner.
“It was really a great baseball game early in the year,” Bullock said.
Tanner Vaughn struggled initially on the mound, Bullock said, walking in the initial T-Birds run. But he settled down after that, eventually going 6.0 full innings with five strikeouts against the five walks.
“Tanner Vaughn didn’t have his best stuff early in the game,” Bullock said. “But he gave us six strong innings, which allowed us to stay in the game.”
W.F. West visits Aberdeen on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Noah Aliff struck out 10 batters in six innings and knocked a two-run double in the sixth inning to give Centralia a 6-3 road victory over Black Hills in 2A Evergreen Conference play Monday.
Offensively, Cameron Erickson notched a two-run double, while Paris Chavez, Gabe Seymour and Moshi Eport each tallied two hits. Landon Kaut had one K in one inning on the mound. Centralia coach Adam Riffe praised Aliff for his performance both at the plate and on the mound.
“He kept us in the game the entire time,” Riffe said. “You can tell he put in work this offseason. It was an outstanding effort.”
Centralia improves to 3-1 overall and hosts Rochester on Wednesday.
The Wahkiakum Mules were too much for the visiting Rainier Mountaineers in a 10-0 mercy-rule defeat in a Central 2B League baseball game on Monday in Cathlamet.
Mules pitcher Beau Carlson tossed all five innings of two-hit ball, striking out eight while walking none. Jake Jeske and Ryder Cruse had the two hits for the Mountaineers in the loss.
“We did not come out with any fire,” Rainier coach Mark Mounts said. “Jake threw a good game and we just didn’t play defense behind him.”
Rainier (3-2) visits Toledo on Thursday for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
Levi Gates struck out 15 and surrendered just three hits as Adna held off Toledo, 4-3, on the road Monday in Central 2B League action.
Gates also led the offensive attack for the Pirates, going 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in the third inning. Tristan Percival was 2-for-4 with two runs and Gabe Slape was 1-for-2 with two runs and a walk.
Toledo pitcher’s Ryan Bloomstrom and Caiden Schultz combined for 13 Ks while giving up just four hits. Kaden Sellards and Geoff Glass had RBI singles for Toledo.
“I like the way we responded with three runs with two outs in the 3rd inning to tie it after getting down early,” Toledo coach Bill Waag said. “We need to learn to play smart for seven innings. We need to clean up the mental and physical mistakes.”
Toledo (1-3) hosts Rainier on Thursday, while Adna (3-1-1) hosts Stevenson on Thursday.
Jeremy Larson mowed down 16 batters and surrendered just three hits as Onalaska ran away with a 10-3 win in seven innings over Winlock on the road Monday.
“We played alright,” Winlock coach Jordan Nailon said. “Onalaska is one of the better one-through-nine lineups in the Central 2B League.”
Ethan Cameron smacked two doubles and scored two runs on three hits, Mason Ulery added two hits and two runs and Spencer Hamilton and Cole Zandell each collected a hit a piece for the Loggers.
For Winlock, Mekhi Morlin led with 1-for-3 batting with a double, an RBI, a run and a stolen base. Landon Tiemens added one hit, two walks, two runs and three stolen bases.
Aiden Eitel threw 4.1 innings for the Cards, striking out five while allowing three hits and one earned run. Also throwing for Winlock was Chris Heikkila, Tiemens and Payton Sickles. Heikkila has now played all nine positions this year.
“He makes us a much better team because of his versatility and willingness to play anywhere,” Nailon said. “He’s invaluable to us.”
Winlock drops to 2-4 and heads to Randle on Thursday to take on Morton-White Pass. Onalaska improves to 2-3 and hosts Toutle Lake at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
The overwhelming Kalama Chinooks were at it once again, this time getting the best of Morton/White Pass, 23-8, in a Central 2B League baseball game in Kalama on Monday.
No further details were available. Morton-White Pass (1-4) hosts Winlock at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
