Pirates run-rule Ravens in district opener

ADNA — Adna’s loss to Tenino on Wednesday doesn’t mean much in the long run. Sure, it ended the Pirates bid at a perfect season, but it was a non-league game at the end of the regular season.

That doesn’t mean that they weren’t looking to get back in the win column, though.

“I was definitely picturing that,” Jack Pennington said.

Pennington and the Pirates did so in a big way, run-ruling Raymond-South Bend 10-0 at home on Saturday to punch their ticket to a district semifinal.

“We really wanted this win,” Pennington said. “And we got it.”

Pennington was stellar on the bump, where he allowed just three hits and walked one in a complete-game shutout.

He missed bats consistently, generating several swings and misses while racking up 14 strikeouts.

“Jack has been pretty lights out all year for us,” Adna coach Jake Overbay said. “He pitches with the no worries and no fear mentality, and it brings a lot of success … The composure is what’s really allowing him to go the distance. He’s been really impressive.”

Adna got on the board to give him some run support in the second, scoring twice thanks to an RBI triple from Ty Bodenhamer and an RBI single from Mat Roundtree.

An Owen Fagernes RBI knock and a sacrifice fly from Cash Smith made it 4-0 in the third, and Smith’s two-run double an inning later was the highlight of a five-run fourth.

Beau Miller came through with the walk-off hit in the fifth, smoking a double to the gap to bring home the Pirates’ 10th run.

Just three days after being held to two runs, Adna finished Saturday’s game with 11 hits, including four extra-base knocks.

“It was a really good way to respond today … It’s tough to go up against a team that you haven’t seen before, but to get the bats rolling again and start to see us find some gaps, it was nice. They battled, and it was a fun game.”

The win puts the Pirates (20-1) into the district semifinal for the third year in a row. Two years ago, they fell in the semi, but last year, they made it to the district title game before losing there.

They’ll have to defeat Toledo in Napavine on Tuesday to not only clinch their spot in the title game, but to also advance to their third straight state tournament.

“Last year we were really close,” Overbay said. “I think this year, if we are given the opportunity again, we’ll be tough to beat. So I really hope we make it.”
