Pirates No-Hit By Ducks

ADNA — Getting shut out for the second straight outing, the Adna baseball team finished with just a handful of baserunners and were held without a hit in a 6-0 loss to Toutle Lake at home Friday afternoon.

The Pirates managed to get Ducks’ starter Zach Swanson to his pitch limit in the sixth, but didn’t fare that much better against reliever Dylan Fraidenburg in the combined no-hit effort.

Oregon State-bound pitcher Swanson finished 5 2/3 innings of work with 15 strikeouts and just four walks.

“They were seeing pitches and fouling them off,” Pirates coach Thad Nelson said. “The outcome isn’t what we want, but they battled and competed. You tip your hat when a kid throws like that, and you look at the other things that went right and wrong and try to grow from that.”

Pirate starter Asher Guerrero countered pretty well after a shaky first inning, pitching three scoreless innings before running into more trouble in the fifth and sixth innings.

Guerrero finished with five innings pitched allowing six runs, with three earned, on four hits and five walks with just strikeouts.

“He struggled a bit in the first but then settled right down,” Nelson said. “Our pitching has been a strong suit this year, but we’re going to have to manufacture more runs. That didn’t happen today and we’ll grow from it and hope to get better.”

The Pirates will hope to scrub the sweep at the hands of the Ducks quickly and get-right against Wahkiakum on Monday.
