The Adna boys basketball team was on its home floor for the first time in nearly two weeks on Friday, and the Pirates came away with a 64-44 win over Wahkiakum in their first game of the Adna Holiday Tournament.
“I’m really proud of our guys,” Adna coach Luke Salme said. “I think every kid played pretty well tonight.”
The Pirates held a slim lead after one, but they extended it before the half by outscoring the Mules 19-9 in the second and continued to build on their lead throughout the second half.
Salme said that the main goal of this last stretch of non-league games is to simply clean up some things, mainly “careless turnovers.”
Adna did a great job limiting those mistakes Friday, as they only turned the ball over six times.
Trevin Salme led the Pirates with 20 points, while Jackson Knittle scored 16 inside. Grayson Humphrey added 14 points, and Gavan Muller scored eight.
The Pirates (7-2, 5-0 C2BL) will get one of their toughest tests of the season on Saturday in their tournament finale, as they’ll welcome unbeaten Tumwater.
“We’ll have our hands full,” Luke Salme said. “But it'll be a great challenge to get us ready for this stretch of league games coming up in January.”
