Pirates Fall to Top-Seeded Gorillas

The plus side of the Adna boys basketball team’s upset run in the district tournament — and the subsequent No. 8 seed the committee gave the Pirates for it — is that it was saved from a loser-out scenario in the opening round of the State tournament.

The downside was that it meant that the Pirates had to go clear across the state to face the best 2B team Washington has to offer, and No. 1 Davenport was happy to send Adna back home decisively with a 75-60 loss in Cheney.

The Gorillas had their lead into double digits by the end of the first quarter, and got it to 20 in the third.

Davenport star Tennessee Rainwater scored 16 points, but also dished out 10 assists, with Cash Colbert scoring 22 and Brenick Soliday adding 15 for the top-seeded team in the 2B bracket.

Seth Meister and Braeden Salme scored 16 points each for Adna, and Lane Johnson had 14 — 13 of which came in the first half.

The Gorillas absolutely dominated the glass, tripling up the Pirates on the boards with 34 rebounds to Adna’s 11. Davenport finished with as many offensive rebounds as Adna had total rebounds, helping the hosts rack up 13 second-chance points.

Adna will head to Spokane for a first-round matchup Wednesday, taking on the winner of the Saturday matchup between No. 9 Lind/Ritzville-Sprague-Washtucna and No. 16 Dayton-Waitsburg in a loser-out game.
