Centralia City Councilor Max Vogt announced the nomination process for the 2024 Centralia Volunteer Recognition Awards is now closed at the Centralia City Council meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 10.

Originally created in 2022 by former Centralia City Councilor Elizabeth Cameron, the awards are meant to highlight those within the Centralia community who share their time and labor doing everything from picking up litter as part of the Centralia Clean Team to helping organize city holiday celebrations.

“I was a little worried about the number (of nominations) that was coming in at the beginning, hardly any, but boy did we have plenty at the end. We have over 20 applicants, and some of those have groups in them,” Vogt said.

He added the Centralia Volunteer Recognition Committee is now going through all of the nominations as they work on choosing the 2024 Centralia Volunteer of the Year.

In 2022, Centralia Clean Team member Joyce Hoerling was chosen as the Volunteer of the Year, and Peter Lahmann took home the award in 2023 for his volunteer efforts with multiple organizations throughout Centralia.

The 2024 Centralia Volunteer Recognition Awards will be given out at a Centralia City Council meeting in January 2025.
