An Oregon State Police trooper shot and killed a person during a traffic stop in Eugene Tuesday afternoon, officials said.
After a state trooper pulled over a driver at the intersection of River Avenue and State Route 569, in Eugene, at 4:26 p.m., the person got out of their car and tried to get a gun from the passenger side, state police said. The trooper used a Taser on the driver, but it didn’t work, nor did the trooper’s verbal commands, according to the police statement. The driver got a hold of the weapon, so the trooper fired his gun.
The person died at the scene, the state police said. The trooper, who has not been named, wasn’t injured. He was put on administrative leave, which is standard procedure. State police did not provide any information about the person who died or any further details about the incident.
The Lane County Inter-Agency Deadly Force Investigation Team is now investigating the shooting.
