Movie Featuring Jeff Goldblum Films Scenes in Tenino, Bucoda

Tenino’s main street will be featured in the independent film “The Mountain,” which is being filmed in a few small towns throughout Western Washington.

Film crews on Friday worked along Sussex Avenue in the historic section of downtown because of the 1950s feel it has, Mayor Wayne Fournier said.

“We all know how great the area is,” he told The Chronicle. “But to see an outside interest in it is pretty cool.”

City Clerk and Treasurer John Millard said the scene filmed in Tenino was of a man coming out of a building, getting into a classic car and then driving off.

“The Mountain” is the latest project by indie film director Rick Alverson, and it stars Goldblum. Set in 1954, it follows an aging psychiatrist and a shy young man as they tour mental hospitals.

“It reminds me in tone of P.T. Anderson’s There Will Be Blood or The Master, metaphorical critiques of the American psyche, in the vein of Death of a Salesman ... It’s not for everybody, but I really like it, I keep working on it, and I like him," Goldblum told The Hollywood Reporter.

The movie crew also planned to film a scene in Bucoda at Joe’s Place.

Fournier said this is the third film this year to record scenes in Tenino, with another planned this summer.

“I think there are different features here that can help tell a story,” he said.

He added he hopes becoming a popular film location will be a larger chapter in Tenino’s quirky history, such as making its own money during the Great Depression or using the flooded quarry as the city’s pool.

“There are all kind of funny things that came up and Tenino goes out and does something bold and interesting,” Fournier said. “Everyone in Tenino seems excited to host this kind of thing.”

Fournier posted a picture of himself, his wife and Jeff Goldbum to Facebook Friday night.

“Super nice guy,” he said in a text message to The Chronicle.
