More than 800 federal Pell Grant recipients in Lewis County will now be eligible for subsidized Comcast internet services through the company’s Internet Essentials initiative, a program providing comprehensive broadband access to low-income individuals.
According to a news release from Comcast, Pell Grant recipients enrolled at Centralia College and Centralia Beauty College are now eligible to take advantage of the initiative, offering high-speed internet to students for $9.95 a month, the opportunity to purchase a low-cost computer and access to free digital literacy training.
This is part of a larger effort to expand eligibility to all Pell Grant recipients in the country within the Comcast service area.
More than 5,600 people in Lewis County have been connected to the Internet Essentials program over the last 10 years, the company says.
“Digital equity is key to success in education and economic mobility, now and into the future,” said Broderick Johnson, Comcast executive vice president, public policy and executive vice president, digital equity, in a statement.
“As our economic, medical and educational systems become increasingly digital, it’s more important than ever that every American gets online. For those young people pursuing higher education, the expansion of Internet Essentials eligibility to Pell Grant recipients is a real boost,” he added.
