Matlock, Shannon Pitch PWV Past Fishermen

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley got a pair of outstanding pitching performances and more than enough offense on Saturday to sweep Ilwaco, 15-0 and 17-0, in Pacific 2B League softball action in Pe Ell.

Olivia Matlock tossed a four-inning perfect game in the opener, facing just 12 batters and aiding her own cause with a double and two RBIs. The Titans piled up 15 hits in the 15-0 win, scoring at least three runs in each inning.

Raegan Portmann, who moved from batting leadoff last season to hitting cleanup in the Titans’ lineup this year, went 2 for 3 with a double and drove in three runs.

“Her replacement for that leadoff spot, Lauren Matlock, has taken that spot and run with it,” PWV coach Ken Olson said of the younger Matlock, an eighth-grader. “Very impressive for a kid so young.”

Merissa Frasier, Dani Shannon and Grace Huber each went 2 for 3 for PWV. Payton Peterson added a home run.

The late game was more of the same. Shannon tossed a three-inning no hitter to record the win and PWV led 17-0 after two innings.

Portmann went 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI, Jillian Hodel was 3 for 3 with a triple, Lauren Matlock went 2 for 3 with a pair of triples, Peterson was 2 for 2 and drove in three runs, and Olivia Matlock was 2 for 2 with a homer and a double.

“I really thought Dani Shannon was sharp on the mound and certainly gives us a one-two punch on the mound this year,” Olson said. “What I really enjoy seeing is that our defense has been very solid. It is real easy to get complacent with our pitchers doing what they are doing.”

PWV (8-2, 8-0 league) plays a doubleheader at South Bend on Tuesday.
