A man who fell off a boat in the Columbia River without a life jacket Saturday is presumed drowned, a spokesperson for the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said.

The man — who hasn’t been identified publicly – fell in the river near Government Island off Northeast Portland around 2 p.m. He never resurfaced, said Deputy John Plock, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.

Rescuers with the Vancouver Fire Department, Portland Fire & Rescue, Port of Portland Fire and the U.S. Coast Guard joined the so far unsuccessful search for the man’s body.

Witnesses told rescuers the man was intoxicated, Plock said.
