All are invited to help plant native trees and shrubs at the Seminary Hill Natural Area in Centralia over the next two weekends.
Volunteers are being sought to dig, plant and support an ecological restoration and accessible trail project in the small valley above the Barner Drive parking lot at the natural area.
The work parties are planned for 9 a.m. to noon on the coming two Saturdays, Feb. 22 and March 1, rain or shine.
Volunteers will dig holes, transport compost and plant about 500 bare root trees and shrubs representing more than a dozen different native species, including western red cedar, ocean spray, cascara, saskatoon and nootka rose.
There will be jobs for everyone of all physical activity levels and abilities: Planting seedlings, separating the small trees/shrubs, handing them to the planters, tagging the plants, putting on protective collars, tamping down the area around the plants and making a ground collar to hold water.
Coffee, cookies and other goodies will be given to workers. Shovels and other tools will be provided, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own supplies if available — especially gloves and sturdy footwear.
“We could use all the people we can get — we’re going to work hard, get our hands dirty, and have a great time,” said Brian Mittge, president of the Friends of the Seminary Hill Natural Area. “The best part will be coming back to see our trees grow over the years and decades to come.”
The project is in partnership with the Lewis County Stream Team, with seedlings donated by the Grays Harbor Conservation District for this restoration effort.
Workers will meet at the covered picnic area in the parking area. If the parking lot is full, park outside the parking area on the street.
What to bring on this outing:
• Boots that can get muddy
• Layers of clothing for various weather: rain, cold, sunny
• Water, beverages and snacks of your choosing. Water and snacks will be available in the picnic shelter.
• Gloves, favorite shovel. Shovels will also be available.
This event is open to the public. All ages are welcome, but children in attendance must be accompanied by an adult or parent.
Anyone interested in working is asked to RSVP for planning purposes by emailing goseminaryhill@gmail.com, but those who don’t RSVP can still show up to work.
