Loggers Drop Third-Straight in Loss to Rainier, Oregon

Trailing 22-14 with 48 seconds left in the game and set up on Rainier, Oregon’s 3-yard line — just feet away from potentially tying the game up — the Loggers fumbled the ball then surrendered an 88-yard touchdown run to the Columbians to take a 28-14 non-league loss on the road on Friday.

It was another frustrating loss for the defending 2B state champions, who have now lost three games in a row. The Loggers have now lost five total games in what has become likely the toughest schedule of any 2B team in the state. Their losses are to 2B’s top-ranked Napavine, 1A’s fifth-ranked Tenino, a Lynden Christian team that received AP top-10 votes, 2B’s No. 2 Kalama and now a one-loss Rainier, Oregon team.

On Friday, Marshall Haight led the offense with 28 carries for 147 yards and a score, while Gunnar Talley added three touches for 49 yards and a TD. Talley also reeled in four catches for 28 yards.

“I thought our kids played well in the third quarter,” Onalaska coach Mazen Saade said. “We challenged them at halftime and had a couple opportunities in the second half. But at the end of the fourth quarter, the little things got us. Obviously, we’ve gotta go back to work and take that pain and harness it. Our focus now is Stevenson this week.”

The Loggers (2-5, 4-1 league) close out the regular season when they host Stevenson on Friday.
