Lewis County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jeffrey Humphrey has resigned amid an ongoing internal investigation into domestic violence allegations and his still-active Lewis County District Court case, the sheriff’s office announced Tuesday.

“Deputy Humphrey is resigning prior to our agency’s internal investigations being completed or discipline being rendered,” the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Humphrey, who was on paid administrative leave during the internal investigation, has been removed from administrative leave and is using his vacation time through Feb. 3. His official resignation date is Feb. 4, according to the sheriff’s office.

“The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office will complete their internal investigative findings and submit the required reports to the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission to determine any misconduct,” the sheriff’s office stated in the news release.

Humphrey, 51, was charged Jan. 6 in Lewis County District Court with one count of first-degree criminal trespass, domestic violence, for allegedly breaking into his estranged wife’s home twice on Nov. 12.

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint regarding Humphrey on Dec. 19.

The Mason County Sheriff’s Office was brought in to conduct a third-party investigation, which resulted in charges being referred to the Lewis County Prosecutor’s Office.

Humphrey pleaded not guilty on Jan. 22 and has a pre-trial hearing scheduled for Feb. 26.

Humphrey has worked for the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office for at least 20 years, according to previous Chronicle reporting.

Humphrey was previously convicted of DUI in 2013 for driving through a road closure on Labree Road and Interstate 5 in Chehalis with a blood alcohol content between .143 and .159, according to previous Chronicle reporting. Humphrey was off duty at the time of the incident.

Humphrey ultimately received a deferred sentence in Lewis County District Court and was put on a two-week, unpaid suspension from the sheriff’s office, according to previous Chronicle reporting.
