Letter to the editor: United Learning Center brings organizations together to support, nurture children

“ULC.”

Ho hum, just another trio of letters.

That is, until you unpack their meaning: United Learning Center.

Then, wow, what a wonderful collaboration of diverse organizations coming together with the common goal of supporting kids and families in Lewis County.

Just think about it. A place that brings together Boys & Girls Club, Discover! Children’s Museum, Bezos Academy Preschool and the City of Centralia under one roof is a dream come true. Imagine citizens, parents, educators and legislators with one aim and single purpose.

That’s what I call united.

Then there is this “museum.” A place to Discover, where kids are encouraged to interact, explore, touch, learn, play and, well, Discover! Just imagine being a vet at a clinic with X-rays and a stethoscope, or a geologist discovering bones at a dino-dig. Then maybe creating with LEGO, singing on a stage, looking at clouds, up close with bugs under a microscope, shopping in a grocery store  and then checking out at the cash register, reading books, making music. All that and more will be available for curious minds all the while being safe and having fun.

Discover! Children’s Museum has had this mission from its start: “to serve and nurture the learning needs of our community’s children and families.”

With this in mind, our desire is to promote those strong, lasting partnerships.

Perhaps Mr. Rogers says it best: “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning.”

The ULC is truly an exciting venture and Discover! Children’s Museum is excited to be a partner.
