Letter to the editor: I’ll take Trump’s chief of staff’s word over rabid supporters

Donald Trump has asserted that as president he should have the authority to order Navy Seal Team 6 to assassinate his political rivals with immunity from prosecution, claiming that a president must be free to act without the concern of criminal prosecution.

Forty-five other presidents have not needed or requested such immunity throughout history. Of course, they did not contemplate murdering their political rivals.

What Trump is asking for is the immunity of King George III. That it is a question before the U.S. Supreme Court demonstrates the degree to which Trump has radically sabotaged normal American thought.

If Trump would think ahead a little and commit his crimes in places more politically friendly to him, by law he would be tried in those places.

Planning a coup to stop the legal transfer of power to remain in office that includes threats to hang your own vice president and the speaker of the house and create slates of fake electors to send to cast illegal Electoral College votes is plenty of cause for indictments.

The state charges in Georgia center around the fake elector scheme and Trump’s phone call to Georgia’s Republican Secretary of State. “All I want to do is find 11,780 votes. C’mon fellas, give me a break ...”

Inciting a mob with pernicious lies to storm the U.S. Capitol to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power and beat the hell out of Capitol Police officers, ultimately causing the death of four of them as Trump did is certainly an indictable offense. Anywhere. And, oh yeah, you MAGA idiots can scrub those “Back the Blue” decals from your cars.

Trump was charged with obstruction and unlawful retention of classified documents because, unlike former Vice President Mike Pence and President Joe Biden, Trump concealed and moved documents in an effort to hide them from investigators. The Presidential Records Act, which Trump claims allows him to take classified material, actually says exactly the opposite. Had Trump returned the documents when he was asked politely for them, as did Pence and Biden, he would not have been charged with a crime.

Are we to believe that MAGA letter writers to The Chronicle know poor little persecuted Donald Trump better than say General John Kelly who was Trump’s chief of staff from 2017 to 2019?

Kelly has described Trump as “the most flawed person I have ever met.” He goes on to say, “he is a person who has no idea what America stands for and what America is all about ... A person who admires autocrats and murderous dictators. A person who has nothing but contempt for our democratic institutions, our Constitution and the rule of law. There is nothing more that can be said. God help us.”

Kelly also confirmed that Trump did call fallen American soldiers “losers and suckers.”

I think when assessing Donald Trump, I will take General Kelly’s word from his firsthand experience with him over the MAGA buffoons of Lewis County.
