Letter to the Editor: Food for Thought

Posted

Even with Christmas now past, I thought of this brief message from my friend and mentor, Rev. Robert Beckman, worthy of some serious consideration any day of the year, perhaps especially during these times; even though his message was written many years ago.

He wrote: “Peace on Earth. ‘Glory be to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.’ (Luke 2:14)

“As the angelic hosts said these words they departed from the shepherds, leaving them to wend their way to the city of Bethlehem. At last the prophecy made long ago had been fulfilled and the shepherds journeyed to visit the newborn Prince of Peace. Coming where the young child lay they found Him wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. There they found the Child of Peace, the gift of God’s love. Since He came almost 2,000 years ago there has been no heart peace without Him. Peace is not just the absence of war. We have won the late war but men will have to agree we are far from winning the peace. When men are willing to take Christ out of the stable and allow Him to enter their homes, their businesses, their lives; then may they look for peace which passes human understanding.

“There will be no peace, national or individual, until the Prince of Peace shall take His throne in the hearts and lives of earth’s inhabitants.”
