Letter to the Editor: An ‘Alice in Wonderland’ Suggestion on Mandates

Posted

“Vaccination rates are lagging in Lewis County, where cases continue to skyrocket to never-before-seen-highs.”

On page Main 8 in last Tuesday’s edition of The Chronicle, I read the article: “Providence Hospital Staffers Describe Life in the Overflowing ER as COVID-19 Cases Surge.”

On page Main 2 of the same edition, I read of the recent “Stop the Mandate” protest in Olympia.    My emotions swing from sympathy, deep gratitude and prayer for all frontline workers who are being stretched to the limit, to anguished perplexity over those who are reacting so differently to this challenging disease.

So I’ve entertained an upside-down idea.

What if a new mandate was issued, calling for everyone to refuse to be vaccinated? Would the protesters still protest? Would they carry the same signs: “Stop the Mandate,” “My Body, My Choice” and “No Mandates Ever!”

Would they go all out to get the vaccine, protesting their right to make their own decisions on such matters, regardless of the safety and welfare of others?

I wonder.
