Landslide Closes Ceres Hill Road

A portion of Ceres Hill Road will be closed for three months due to a landslide that occurred last week.

The closure will allow county officials to evaluate the slide’s impacts, conduct a geotechnical report and make necessary repairs. The process will require gaining access to private properties around the road.

When asked if the road closure would pose an inconvenience to drivers, Lewis County Manager Erik Martin responded, “the inconvenience is that the road’s not there.”

“It’s a treacherous road to begin with,” he added. “Maintaining it has always been difficult, so hopefully we can find a quick solution.”

According to Lewis County Deputy Director of Emergency Management Andy Caldwell, addressing landslides can pose significant costs.

Floods back in January resulted in $2.8 million in damages countywide, largely due to a handful of landslides, where earth shifted due to being saturated by heavy rains.
