In Loving Memory of Wayne E. Dunbar: 1925-2022

Posted

Wayne E. Dunbar, 96, passed away on Dec. 27, 2021 in Chehalis. He was born and raised near Galesburg, Illinois. Always industrious, he sought odd jobs to help the family when his father died at a young age. Prior to his induction in the U.S. Navy during WWII, he met the love of his life, Barbara Carr. After fulfilling his military commitment, he returned to Illinois and married her. In October 1949, with his wife and young children, he moved to Lakewood. Wayne joined the Lakewood Fire Department and secured a job at the newly formed Lakewood Water District. His employment there lasted 34 years and he retired after serving as superintendent for several years. He moved to Salkum, Washington to pursue his passion of steelhead fishing and RVing around the states. His greatest love was his family and lending a hand to help them and his many friends. Some of his most fond memories were hosting family reunions and gathering around the bonfire sharing stories. He was an avid storyteller. One of his favorites was his recollection as a youngster riding in the rear seat of the family sedan with his mother at the wheel, transporting moonshine for the “old man” between Peoria and Cicero. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, of 73 years, and sons Michael and James. He is survived by Patricia (Terry) Wheaton, Nancee (Darrell) Alvord, daughter-in-law Linda Dunbar, eight grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held at Mountain View Cemetery on Jan. 23, 2022 at 1:30 p.m.
