In Loving Memory of Spencer Cheney: 1994-2022

Posted

Spencer J. Cheney was tragically taken on June 30, 2022, in Grayland, Washington. He was 28. Born on Jan. 28, 1994, in Centralia, Washington, Spencer spent most of his life in Lewis County. He was a self described "Timber Tramp," and worked all over the Pacific Northwest, including Southeastern Alaska. A faller by trade, Spencer would joke that his veins ran with tree sap. From a very young age, Spencer loved and was passionate about the great outdoors. He enjoyed anything and everything that could be done outside like camping, hiking, riding motorcycles and ATVs, even star-gazing, but he especially loved hunting and fishing.

An armchair historian, Spencer took special interest in both the logging industry and history of the military. When it came to these topics, he was somewhat of an expert. He could answer any question someone might have on either subject and then some.

Along with being a history buff, Spencer was a voracious reader. Once he learned to read, he was off to the races and couldn't get his hands on enough books. He would rather read than do almost anything else in the world (except for hunting and fishing of course.) His favorite writer was Louis L'Amour. He had gone through the entirety of the author's works, at least twice, if not more. In addition to Spencer's affinity for books, he thoroughly loved listening to music. His taste in music was eclectic, to say the least. He could listen to ‘70s funk, classic country, and hip hop, as well as classic and pop rock all in one day.

Spencer loved food. That included making food, talking about food and shopping for food. His appetite was so legendary, his family affectionately called him "The Vacuum."

He was known for his quick-wit and never missed an opportunity to poke some fun, especially at himself. Bigger than life, he had a booming voice and a smile that, although full of mischief, never failed to melt your heart. When Spencer entered a room, you knew it. He never met a stranger. Everyone was a good buddy, a close friend or (occasionally) an honorary cousin.

He was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by all that knew him.

Spencer leaves behind the light of his life, and apple of his eye, daughter Stella Elizabeth Ann; parents Tom and Carey Young; brother Hayden (Sophia) Young; grandma Sandy Wolfe; grandparents Darrell and Ruth Young; and half-siblings James, Kenny and Shaylee; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. Spencer was preceded in death by his grandpa Dave Wolfe, his biological father, and grandparents Robert and Mina Cheney.

Please join Spencer's family in a celebration of life and potluck on Aug. 20, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Glenoma Community Park on Glenoma Road, Glenoma, Washington, 98336.
