James Albert Hansen, known to family and friends as Jim and to his parents simply as “Jimmy,” passed away peacefully on Jan. 24, 2025, in Gig Harbor, Washington. He was born to Pearl and Albert Hansen on July 10, 1942, in Chehalis, Washington.
Jim grew up in Chehalis and graduated from W.F. West High School in 1960. A talented athlete, he had the opportunity to pursue a career in minor league baseball but instead chose to serve his country, enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1960. He was stationed aboard the USS Boyd and served honorably until his discharge from the reserves in 1966.
Following his military service, Jim embarked on a long and successful career in the insurance industry with Bankers Life and Casualty, where he worked for over 55 years. His dedication and expertise earned him numerous accolades, including recognition as a President’s Honor Circle Lifetime member, a National Life Underwriters Quality Award recipient and President of the Tacoma Pierce County Life Underwriters Association. Beyond his professional achievements, Jim had a heart for service. He organized and supported a charity golf tournament in Tacoma benefiting Hospice, for which he was honored with the prestigious Louis Dublin Award.
In August 1970, Jim married the love of his life, Anita (Smith) Hansen. Together, they built a life centered on family, faith and love. They raised two children, Shane (Jane) Hansen and Mitzi (Bill) Powell, who brought them immense joy. Jim was a devoted grandfather to Hannah, Thomas and Sarah Hansen, as well as Tristan Powell. He also cherished his role as a great-grandfather to Margot and Lucy Turnbull.
Beyond his career and family, Jim was passionate about community involvement. He was an active member of The Rhododendron Society, serving as president, and contributed his time and efforts to the Wollochet Harbor Club. Whether he was cheering on the Seahawks, Mariners and Rainiers, restoring his beloved 1963 Buick Riviera, or enjoying time with loved ones, Jim lived his life with quiet strength and unwavering integrity.
Jim will be remembered for his deep love for his family, his strong work ethic and his steadfast, peaceful nature. His legacy of love, service and resilience will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025, at Haven of Rest in Gig Harbor, Washington. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Jim’s honor to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research at https://www.michaeljfox.org
