Clay M. Hartzell, 87, a longtime resident of Winlock, Washington, passed away Nov. 4, 2022, in Centralia with his family by his side.
Clay was born on Sept. 1, 1935, at University Place, Washington in his parent's home to Richard and Mary (Williams) Hartzell. Clay graduated from Clover Park High School and then enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served his country. After completion of his service, he began work for Firestone where he was recognized for top performing sales abilities earning him awards and trips.
He went on to purchase a Western Auto store that he ran for many years. During this time of his employment he married the love of his life Winifred (Winn) on May 31, 1958. They went on to purchase their farm in Winlock to try their hands at farming. After a few years of farming Clay began to drive truck for Lemmon's Trucking, which he ended up doing for 20 years. In addition to farming and driving truck, they started their little business up “Hartzell Bark and Country Flowers," something they both loved doing.
Clay and Winn were married 51 years and during those years they raised a family of four. They then enjoyed traveling around the world. He is survived by his four children, Scott (Abby), of Long Beach, Washington; Brett (Rhonda), of Renton, Washington; Jeff (Daphne), of Chehalis, Washington; and Kim Teitzel, of Olympia, Washington. Through his four children, Clay had nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Winifred, and brothers Barton, Ward and Allen Hartzell.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, 2022, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 379 state Route 505, Winlock, Washington, 98596.
