In Focus: Lewis County Hunting Highlights

"This is Gabriel Markstrom with the buck he harvested Oct. 30 in Lewis County. Gabe is legally blind, but really enjoys getting out in the woods and hunting blacktail with family. This is his third buck in as many years." Submitted by Kyle Markstrom.

“Brinley Kephart, 10, shot this 5x5 bull elk on youth special permit Oct. 7 in Western Washington. Shot with 6.5 PRC. A lot of ups and downs as she shot and missed a bull on opening day of her hunt. She stuck with it and finally connected. The smile says it all.” Submitted by Brinley’s dad, Travis Kephart.

"Having wild game in our freezer is a family tradition and a blessing that we are tremendously thankful for here in the Gerard home. This photo is of Drayven Gerard, 16, left, and his dad Jayson Gerard with Drayven's first-ever buck! Harvested out of the Winston Creek area. These are some special times in the woods with your dad!" Submitted by Amber Gerard, of Silver Creek.

Here’s a local hunting submission from Tristen Mitten showing his stepdaughter Shaina Dunlap with her first buck. Dunlap harvested the deer on her 18th birthday, Oct. 25, near Lincoln Creek. Mitten said “it was awesome to be a part of this.”

"Ella Olson, 11 years old, bagged her buck on the last day of the season after hunting him all season and passing on smaller bucks! She is proud to hunt and help feed her family. Her favorite food is deer steak and pepperoni!" Submitted by Tonya Olson. The deer was harvested on the family's property in the Centralia area.

Lea Elder submitted this photo of Brodey Chandler, of Onalaska, with his first buck harvested on Oct. 27 in the Mossyrock area. Brodey is 13 years old and his second year hunting he was able to fill his first tag, Elder said.

Here's a submission from Mason Musselman, who harvested this buck on state land off of Lincoln Creek Road on Oct. 25.

Vikki Trimble provided this photo of a buck she harvested Oct. 31 on Weyerhaeuser land near Bunker Creek. “This was my first solo harvest/hunt and largest buck in over 15 years,” she wrote. “Very proud of this guy and the work that was involved in scouting and hunting him. … Picture taken with my daughter as she was just as excited about it as her mama.”

Jess Dzinbal harvested this deer around the Lincoln Creek area on Oct. 16.

While the warm weather and lack of moisture may have been a hindrance to Western Washington hunters early this 2022 hunting season, things got hot for the local modern black-tailed deer hunters Halloween weekend.

For the hunters that haven’t tagged out yet, there is still late season to look forward to in Western Washington. Late modern firearm season is Nov. 17 to Nov. 20. Late archery season for black-tailed deer is Nov. 23 to Dec. 31, though regulations vary by GMU. Late muzzleloader season is Nov. 23 to Dec. 15.
