RAINIER — Rainier erased a 10-point halftime deficit and roared back to life with a 40-point second half to capture its first home victory this season with a 55-41 win over Winlock on Thursday in non-league action.

The Mountaineers played a little too tight in the first half, coach Brandon Eygabroad said, as the Cardinals reeled off a 17-6 run in the second quarter to take a 25-15 lead at the half.

But Rainier swung back in the third quarter, going on a 17-6 run of their own in the third quarter, then outscored the Cardinals 23-10 in the final frame to preserve the win.

“We came out and threw the press in the second half and turned them over a bunch,” Eygabroad said. “We played some great team ball in the second half and shots started falling.”

Faith Boesch led the offensive charge for the Mountaineers with a game-high 16 points. Isabella Holmes added 13 points and 11 rebounds and Bryn Beckman also finished with a double-double of 12 points and 16 rebounds, including 10 offensively.

The Mountaineers rebounded well as a team, winning the rebound margin 50-37 and hauling in 23 offensive boards. It helped offset a poor shooting night (33% from the field).

Winlock was led by Addison Hall’s 15 points, while Charlie Carper added nine and Kindyl Kelly had seven.

Winlock (4-2) heads to Napavine for a 5:30 p.m. matchup on Saturday. Rainier (5-2) has its first league game at Wahkiakum Saturday.
