Hot Temperatures Prompt Emergency Burn Ban in Lewis County

With a potentially record-setting heatwave on the horizon, Lewis County has enacted emergency burn restrictions, effective Friday, June 25.

Temperatures are projected to hit 106 in Centralia, creating “substantial fire dangers,” according to a county news release.

“The emergency burn ban will be in place until the conditions improve. All land clearing, residential and silvicultural burning will be restricted until further notice,” the release reads.

Only recreational campfires will be allowed, if they abide by the following:

  • Campfires can’t exceed 3 feet in diameter, and must have a metal, stone or brick ring around them and a 2-foot clearing of exposed soil around them.
  • Campfires must have a 10-foot horizontal and 20-foot vertical clearing of all flammable material.
  • Campfires must be attended by a responsible person at least 16 years old who is ready to extinguish the fire with a shovel and 5-gallon bucket or hose connected and charged with water.
  • Residents must completely extinguish campfires by pouring water or moist soil and stirring with a shovel until everything is cool to the touch.

The use of self-contained camp stoves is encouraged as an alternative to campfires.

These restrictions apply to individuals with a current burning permit.
