Toledo used a high-pressure defense to stun Mossyrock early and fend off the Vikings for a 42-28 non-league battle on Saturday in Mossyrock.
“Toledo was super aggressive and played tough defense,” Mossyrock coach Autumn Moorcroft said. “They caught us off guard, forced us into turnovers and we had to fight back the entire game.”
Toledo held onto a 21-15 lead at the half, led by eight entering the fourth quarter then pressed the Vikings until they were gassed and took advantage of their turnovers.
Stacie Spahr led all scorers and rebounders with 17 points and 12 boards. Greenlee Clark added 12 points, four assists and four steals, while Marina Smith had 10 points and swiped six steals.
Mossyrock was led by Hailey Brooks’ seven points, while Caelyn Marshall and Jade Padrick each had six and Payton Torrey chipped in five.
“They have some really good players,” Toledo coach Brian Layton said. “We rotated some girls on Torrey, and CLark did a great job on Brooks. Our goal was to use our bench and wear them down.”
Toledo (3-2) wins its third straight and hosts Stevenson on Tuesday. Mossyrock (3-1) takes its first loss and hosts Columbia Adventist on Monday.
Callie Lawrence scored 14 points and Morgan Hamilton added 10 as the Onalaska Loggers eased past the Morton-White Pass Timberwolves 53-6 in a Central 2B League girls basketball game in Morton on Saturday.
Natalia Armstrong led the Timberwolves, whose eight-deep roster is comprised of six freshmen and two sophomores, in scoring with four points.
Ony jumped out to a 21-2 lead after the initial period, then shut out MWP in the second half.
Onalaska (2-2) visits Toutle Lake on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Morton/White Pass (2-5) visits Napavine on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Charlie Carper scored 15 points, but Pe Ell couldn’t defend the corner 3 as the Naselle Comets downed the Trojans 44-31 in a 1B non-league girls basketball game in Pe Ell.
Lauren Katyryniuk led all scorers with 22 points for the Comets, with 18 coming from beyond the 3-point line.
Pe Ell coach Danny Cox said his Trojans kept losing the Comets in the corners, and the Naselle shooters made Pe Ell pay for it.
But it wasn’t a total failing on Pe Ell’s part.
Cox is fielding a short-handed roster. Down to just six girls, fatigue becomes a problem, especially a team squad like Naselle. Even so, Pe Ell made a run in the third quarter, outscoring Naselle 14-6 in that third period, cutting 12-point halftime deficit down to four. But the short bench and resulting fatigue caught up to the Trojans, and Naselle pulled away.
“We battled back best we could with what we had,” Cox said.
Pe Ell (1-2) visits Columbia Adventist on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
