Girls Hoops: Bearcats Prevail in Round Two of Swamp Cup

W.F. West junior Drea Brumfield led all scorers with 19 points to help the Bearcats cruise past Centralia, 65-18, in round two of the 2021 edition of the Swamp Cup Wednesday in the Hub City.

“It was a little sluggish start for both teams,” W.F. West coach Kyle Karnofski said. “We got things figured out on defense in the third quarter and held them scoreless.”

Lexi Roberts scored 12 of her 17 points in the first quarter, while Madi Mencke added 11 and Mak Mencke and Morgan Rogerson each had six.

“Lexi played really well offensively, and Mak played really well on defense and had some nice assists,” Karnofski said.

The Tigers trailed 17-9 after one quarter and 40-13 at the break.

“It’s the pressure,” Centralia coach Doug Ashmore said. “It’s hard for us to simulate that. We just tried to do different things in the second half but (W.F. West) doesn’t lose anything when they go to their bench.”

It was senior night for Centralia’s lone senior Rhegan Jenkins.

“I truly appreciate the hard work and dedication she gave our program the last four years,” Ashmore said.

The Tigers were led by Makayla Chavez’s 10 points, which included three 3-pointers. Maddie Corwin added four points and Lily Babka had two.

Centralia (0-10, 0-10 league) is off until the district tournament next week.

W.F. West (13-0, 9-0 league) travels to Black Hills on Friday in its regular-season finale.
