Girls Bowling: Bearcats Easily Handle Shelton in Season Opener

Posted

The W.F. West girls bowling team began its 2021 season just the way it ended the 2020 season: by winning in convincing fashion. The defending state champions crushed Shelton, three games to none, and won total pins 2252 to 1246.

“We cruised through the 2020 season undefeated including league, non-league, district, regionals and state having never lost a game and never even being behind,” W.F. West coach Donnie Bunker said. “We feel our team this year may be just as good”.

The Bearcats are coming off a 15-0 record and their first state championship in their short program history.

“This season is definitely a challenge, though,” Bunker said.

Currently, the Bearcats don’t have a home to practice in with Fairway Lanes shutting down. They try to practice everyday anyway they can, whether  it’s drills in the gym, watching PBA and college videos or, if they can get transportation, by traveling to Westside Lanes in Olympia or the former Victory Lanes in Morton.

“We bowled pretty well against Shelton, but we proved we are not in bowling shape yet as evidenced by our struggles in the third game last night,” Bunker said. “We definitely ran out of gas the last game but still dominated the scoring.”

Sophomore Piper Chalmers led the way in scoring averaging 200.33 with a high game of 215 followed by Brianna Powe’s 594, averaging 198 with a match high game 256, And Camille Aldrich averaging 184.66 with a 554 series.

The Bearcats return to action Friday with a match against Tumwater at Westside Lanes in Olympia at 2:30 pm.
