NAPAVINE — Braden Thomas busted out a game-high 25 points, Zander Blakenship-Todd added 20 and Adna fought off Napavine for a 59-47 here Friday in Central 2B League action.

The Pirates (10-8, 5-3) have now won five of their last six with two regular season games to go. Napavine fell to 10-7, 2-6 with the loss.

“It was tight the whole way,” Napavine coach Rex Stanley said. “Not many easy games in this league.”

Napavine was led by Keith Olson’s 16 points and Laythan Demarest’s 11. Olson and Cade Evander each grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Tigers lost it during a critical stretch in the third quarter with untimely turnovers, while the Pirates hit 3s to extend their lead to eight. Napavine couldn’t climb back in it after that.

“We played fairly well,” Stanley said. “The empty possessions were just a killer. We gave away 10 possessions without getting a shot off.”

Napavine heads to Winlock on Tuesday. Adna hosts Kalama on Tuesday.

Ducks Hand Cards First C2BL Loss

WINLOCK — The Cardinals clawed back late, but Toutle Lake got a 41-39 win — and the top spot, for the moment, in the Central 2B League boys basketball standings — here Friday night.

The Cardinals trailed 35-24 going into the fourth quarter, but dug themselves out of the hole and cut the lead to its final 41-39 margin with about 15 seconds left on the clock.

The Cardinals turned the ball over, got it back after a missed Duck foul shot, and got one final look at an unsuccessful three-pointer as time expired.

“We made a game of it,” Winlock coach Nick Bamer said. “Hats off to Toutle. We were struggling to get the ball to go in and settled for bad shots. They had good perimeter defense.”

Broc Keeton led the Ducks with 15 points. Jackson Cox and Chase Hadaller pitched in 10 points each.

Bryce Cline led Winlock with 16 points. Noah Patching added 10.

Neither team shot particularly well, with the Cardinals going 15 of 51 from the field and the Ducks hitting at a 28% clip (14 of 50).

The win puts the teams in a technical tie with identical 7-1 records in C2BL play, but the head-to-head win gives the Ducks the top seed to the District 4 tournament in the event of a tiebreaker.

“It’s crazy how many people were there,” Bamer said, noting a line out the door at 5 p.m. “It was standing-room only. It was a really fun atmosphere.”

Winlock (15-3, 7-1 league) hosts Napavine on Tuesday.

Toledo Rallies Past Esary, Chinooks

TOLEDO — The Indians trailed throughout, but made a big push in the fourth quarter and got two big free throws from Duke Schaplow to beat Kalama, 52-50, here Friday night.

The Indians turned the ball over a play earlier, but coaxed a missed shot out of Kalama and got the ball back with a few seconds left on the clock. Schaplow’s 3-point attempt hit the front iron, but he followed followed up his own rebound and was fouled on the putback.

His game-winning foul shots came with 1.5 seconds left on the clock.

“For two teams fighting to stay alive, it was a great game,” Toledo coach Grady Fallon said. “It was loud, back and forth. It was cool.”

The teams came into the game knotted at 2-5 — along with Napavine — for eighth place in the C2BL standings. Eight C2BL teams advance to the District 4 tournament.

The win, combined with Napavine’s loss to Adna on Friday, put the Indians (7-11, 3-5 league) alone in eight place, with a game at league-leading Toutle Lake on Tuesday.

Carlo Arceo-Hansen led Toledo with 17 points and added eight rebounds, eight assists and three steals. Schaplow added nine points and six rebounds, and Walker Sorensen played what Fallon called his best game of the season with eight points and eight boards.

Freshman Jaxon Cook chipped in nine points with seven rebounds.

Keegan Kolb led the Vikings with 24 points. Matthew De Hoyos chipped in 12, and Gunner Mulligan added 10.
