ADNA — Adna’s Karsyn Freeman became the second area athlete in as many years to hit 2,000 career points on Saturday, surpassing the mark during Adna’s 50-40 win over Olympia in a packed gymnasium.
The 2,000th point came on a free throw just under two minutes into the second quarter, one that officially made Freeman the first female in Adna history to reach that mark.
The game was paused, and Freeman was presented a commemorative basketball at midcourt by Adna coach Chris Bannish. During the stoppage, the Adna student section held up blue signs with the number 2,000 behind her.
“I’m just really honored,” Freeman said after the game, holding the basketball with the number 2,000 in her left hand while enjoying a postgame treat with her right. “It’s a big accomplishment … No one really does that. There might be a couple girls out there that have done it. It’s huge.”
After the brief stoppage, Freeman returned to the line and sank her second free throw.
“I was a little nervous on the free throws,” Freeman said with a laugh. “I always get scared on free throws. I’m like ‘If I don’t make this, it’s okay. If I do, then that’s good.’”
The record-setting free throw was part of another dominant offensive night for Freeman, who went on to finish the game with 33 points. It’s another impressive outing for the senior, who has now scored 30-plus against White River, Annie Wright, and Olympia.
“She’s doing it against the elite of the elite,” Bannish said. “She gets to shoot more than everybody else because she makes 60 percent of what she takes … Plus, she’s doing a better job of knowing the offense.
The 10-0 run that changed things wasn’t just Freeman, though. She kickstarted it with a three-point play to tie the game at 30, and McKenna Torrey followed with a three to give the Pirates the lead.
Gaby Guard and Bailey Chapman followed with layups inside, and just like that, the Pirates led 37-30.
“It’s not always gonna be Karsyn,” Bannish said. “We’re starting to get those things. I thought we did a good job finding other people during that run. It’s just been a really good cohesive effort by all of them.”
The Adna defense clamped down as the game went along as well. After scoring 16 points in the first quarter, the Bears scored just 24 points over the final 24 minutes of the game.
“I think once we settled in, our defense switched,” Bannish said. “I thought we executed all of our sets almost to perfection in the second half.”
It’s Adna’s second straight win over an opponent from a higher classification. On Friday, the Pirates crushed 3A Kelso, and Olympia was an 8-1 4A team entering its matchup against Adna.
“We knew what we were gonna do,” Freeman said. “We came out there strong and confident, and I think that’s what we really needed.”
The tough non-league slate dates all the way back to Adna’s first pair of games, when it played at King’s Way Christian before hosting Annie Wright.
“We are challenging ourselves as much as we can,” Bannish said. “I’m very proud of where we’re at, but not satisfied. We know if we play as hard defensively as we do offensively, we’ll be okay.”
Adna (7-1) will look to continue its run on Friday at home against Cascade Christian.
