Four dogs perished in a house fire in the 2800 block of Little Hanaford Road in Centralia on Saturday.

The homeowners reportedly came home and found smoke coming from the residence Saturday night and called for aid, according to the Riverside Fire Authority, which had crews dispatched to the scene just after 10:45 p.m.

The house was engulfed in flames when crews arrived, according to Riverside Fire Marshal Kevin Anderson. Crews took up a defensive position outside to contain the fire, calling Chehalis Fire, Lewis County Fire District 5, Lewis County Fire District 6 and the West Thurston Regional Fire Authority for aid due to the limited water available on-site.

Crews had extinguished the fire and began leaving the scene at about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, with a unit staying behind on fire watch until 4:30 a.m., according to Anderson.

Aside from the animals, no injuries were reported.

The house itself was a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
