TOLEDO — Rainier senior Bailey Elwell pitched and hit — 7 for 8 at the plate — the Mountaineers to a doubleheader sweep of Toledo on Monday, 12-8 and 11-4.

In Game 1, Elwell sparked the offense by going 4 for 4 with three doubles, three runs and two RBIs in a 12-8 win.

The Mountaineers smacked nine doubles in the game, highlighted by Chloe Rutts’ inside-the-park home run. Keira Anderson and Madison Mounts were both 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs.

Elwell pitched a complete game for the victory, allowing eight runs on 14 hits and two walks while striking out six.

“Real slow start hitting in the beginning with a couple errors,” Rainier coach Kyle Greenwood said.

Toledo’s offense was led by Brynn Williams going 3 for 3 with two runs and an RBI. Abbie Marcil was 3 for 4 and Quyn Norberg was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run.

“They’re a really good hitting team,” Greenwood said.

Bethany Bowen threw all seven innings for the Riverhawks, allowing 12 runs on 18 hits and two walks while punching out five.

In Game 2, Elwell and Anderson each went 3 for 4, with Elwell scoring three runs and Anderson two runs, as the Mountaineers won 11-4.

“One thing special about this team is once we start making mistakes, they rally around each other,” Greenwood said. “Almost every girl that gets on base, we’d find a way to score.”

Toledo hosts Napavine on Wednesday in another league tilt. Rainier travels to Morton-White Pass on Tuesday.
