Dahl Dominates Four Events at Tigers’ Home Meet

NAPAVINE — Napavine senior Lucas Dahl won four events, and the Toledo boys and Rainier girls were the squads who came out on top in team scores during an eight-school meet at Napavine High School on Thursday.

Dahl smoked his competition in all three of his individual events, winning the 100-meter dash by nearly four-tenths of a second in a season-record of 11.20. He won the 200-meter dash by over a second in a time of 23.37, and took the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 8.5 inches — over 3 feet longer than the runner-up.

Dahl also ran a leg in the winning 4x100-meter relay — with Peyton League, Colin Shields and Adin Stratton — that finished with a time of 46.26.

Despite those performances, Toledo boys easily won the team meet with 181 points, with Rainier coming in second (129.5) and Napavine finishing third (117.5).

Riverhawk winners included Conner Olmstead in the 400 (54.84), Treyton Marty in the 3200 (11:16.07) and the 4x400 relay which included Olmstead, Tyler Harris, Jordan McKenzie and Carson Olmstead (3:48.34).

Rainier’s Jeremiah Nubbe — who leads the nation in the discus with a PR of 205 feet, 2 inches — tossed 202 feet, 7.5 inches on Thursday to win by 78 feet. He also won the shot put by 7 feet (48-04.5).

Nubbe wasn’t even sure if he was going to throw after having a bit of a shoulder issue. But after waking up Thursday morning and feeling OK, he decided to give it a go.

“I was able to get some good throws in,” Nubbe said. “Still hoped for more, but still consistently getting up there.”

Being ranked No. 1 in the nation was a goal of Nubbe’s, and has his eyes now set on a national title. And he knows his nation-leading mark may not stay safe for long — especially with it being so early in the season.

“In my eyes, it’s No. 1 right now, but another guy (Zane Force) has some good marks and who beat me last year at the Eugene nationals,” Nubbe said. “He’s really legit.”

Also on the boys side, Pe Ell’s Carter Phelps won the 110 hurdles in a PR of 16.87 and the 300s in a time of 45.11. Both marks are the best in the state’s 1B classification.

On the girls side Thursday, Rainier won the team meet with 141.4 points. Napavine was fourth (76.5) and Toledo fifth with 56.

Rainier was led by Acacia Murphy in the 100-meter dash (13.93) and the long jump (13-07), Selena Niemi in the 800 (2:40.35) and 3200 (13.25.01), Emma Mathson in the 100 hurdles (22.67) and the 4x400 relay with Mathson, Ella Marvin, Hailey Tyrrell and Niemi.
