Cross country roundup: Stout edges out Marty in Ilwaco


The 5,000-meter boys race at the JW Black Lake Race in Ilwaco came down to the final few feet between Adna’s Jordan Stout and Toledo’s Treyton Marty, but Stout came out in front by three-tenths of a second to take the win in the 60-runner field.

Stout finished with a time of 18:58.58, just ahead of Marty’s 18:58.89.

When it came to the team competition — on the boys’ side, at least — the day belonged to Winlock, led by Chase Trodahl, who took third in 19:28.49. Behind him, Xavier Sancho-Carrillo was eighth in 21:47.86, while Freddy Patching was 13th at 22:43.57, Mason Ruiz was 15th at 22:47.67 and Jacob Trodahl was 16th at 22:55.3. The Cardinals finished with 51 points as a team, ahead of 

Adna’s Bailey Davis punched in a top-10 time of 22:21.07, right ahead of teammate Nathanael Schueber, who was 11th at 22:21.5.

In the girls’ race, Adna’s Megan Price finished the best out for the area, finishing fourth in 30:27.56. Teammate Megan Stout was fifth at 30:53.51. Winlock’s pair of Victoria Sancho (31:49.74) and Natalie Cardenas Hernandez (31:54.9) took sixth and seventh, respectively, and Toledo’s Kasey Landreau was ninth at 33:49.25, with teammate Kira Winters in 11th at 39:14.23.

Ingram, Gumaelius impress at Rainier invitational

Rainier’s Madison Ingram and Oakville’s Cecil Gumaelius were among the top finishers at the Rainier Invitational on Thursday, as the Mountaineers and Acorns competed alongside several other schools.

In the girls’ race, Ingram came in third, crossing the finish line in 20:50.29. Ingram was one of four Mountaineers to place in the top 10, as Angelica Askey placed seventh with a time of 23:34.56, Rayanna Wisner wasn’t far behind in eighth at 23:43.66, and Ella Marvin rounded out the top 10 with a time of 24:11.13.

Kinsley Barlow was Rainier’s fifth runner to cross the finish line, clocking a time of 25:25.11.

Despite five runners in the top 15, the Mountaineers just missed out on the top team score, finishing two points behind Montesano.

Carmella Gumaelius, Oakville’s lone runner in the girls’ race, finished 23rd with a time of 26:47.37.

In the boys’ race, Oakville eighth-grader Cecil Gumaelius stood out, placing seventh out of 54 runners with a time of 18:46.02.

Rainier had two boys finish in the top 15, as James Meldrum placed 11th with a time of 19:44.71 and Zach Hamilton placed 13th with a time of 20:08.25.
