College Hoops: Blazer Women Trounce Pierce

Freshman point guard Najahia Forks scored a team-high 19 points and hauled in eight boards as Centralia College ran away from Pierce College for a 54-35 road win Thursday.

“We’re still not scoring as much as I’d like to but our defense is fantastic,” Centralia College coach Caleb Sells said. “We’ll take the good with the bad.”

The Trailblazers held a 39-26 lead at the half when Sells told his team they would secure the win with staunch defense the rest of the way. It worked. The Blazers held Pierce scoreless for the first five minutes of the second half to pull away for good.

“We play a funky zone defense and our players are operating it at a high level,” Sells said. “It’s been awesome. Saw a lot of growth on the offensive side as well.”

Erika Brumfield added nine points, eight rebounds and four assists. Mallory Williams grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds and Lexie Sederburg hauled in 10 boards and had five deflections.

Centralia College (3-2) hosts Highline (2-1) at 5 p.m. Friday.
