'Code Red Emergency Situation': Bloodworks Northwest Reports Shortage

With donations in “precipitous decline” since February, Bloodworks Northwest is in a “code red emergency situation,” according to community engagement strategist Juan Cotto.

Cotto announced the situation Wednesday during a state Department of Health briefing, noting that the nonprofit — which supplies blood to the majority of Pacific Northwest hospitals — has been operating on a 24-hour supply in the last two weeks.

“So it’s a really critical moment,” he said, noting that the issue exists across the state and country.

About 27% of donors have canceled Bloodworks Northwest appointments recently, possibly due to nice weather. And with an uptick in usage, Cotto reported that the issue represents the “biggest blood shortage since the pandemic began a year ago.”

Washingtonians can donate blood regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status. There is no waiting period to donate after receiving any version of the vaccine. To find a location and schedule a donation appointment, go to bloodworksnw.org and click “book now.”
