A Chehalis man accused of riding a motorcycle at over 100 mph past both a Napavine police officer and a Lewis County Sheriff’s Office deputy on Sept. 26, 2022, had his first appearance in Lewis County Superior Court on Tuesday.

The Lewis County Prosecutor’s Office filed charges against the defendant, Damion E. Robbins, 45, on Dec. 19.

Robbins is accused of driving a motorcycle at over 100 mph past a Napavine officer parked at the intersection of Forest Napavine Road East and state Route 508 just before 7:30 p.m. The Napavine officer activated his vehicle’s lights and siren, but the motorcycle failed to yield, according to court documents.

The officer reportedly watched the motorcycle “travel through heavy traffic” on northbound Interstate 5 at milepost 72, “changing lanes several times to maneuver in front of other motorists,” according to court documents.

About 20 seconds after the Napavine officer broadcasted the situation over the radio, a deputy with the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office saw a motorcycle driving “at a high rate of speed, coming up from behind him,” per court documents. The deputy activated his lights and tried to catch up to the motorcycle, but given the excessive speed the motorcycle was traveling at, the deputy terminated the pursuit near milepost 75.

The deputy reportedly watched the motorcycle switch into the fast lane and slow down behind traffic before going around the traffic and accelerating again, according to court documents. The deputy lost sight of the vehicle just past Exit 76.

Meanwhile, the Napavine officer returned to the Napavine Police Department, where he spoke with a man “who provides a cleaning service for the city,” according to court documents.
The man reportedly told the officer he had recently run into Robbins, who allegedly told the man he had outrun both a Napavine officer and a Lewis County Sheriff’s deputy.

When the Napavine officer spoke with Robbins on Sept. 27, Robbins reportedly said he was riding his friend’s black and red Ducati motorcycle on state Route 508 before getting on I-5 the day prior. He reportedly denied seeing the Napavine officer’s vehicle but allegedly admitted to seeing the deputy’s patrol vehicle.

“Robbins advised he was surprised the deputy did not try to pull him over as he was traveling at speeds of 90 mph,” according to court documents.

Robbins has since been charged with two counts of attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle, a class C felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

The Lewis County Prosecutor’s Office issued Robbins a summons notice on Dec. 27 ahead of a Jan. 17 preliminary hearing.

Given that Robbins was present for that hearing and has a local address, a judge ruled Tuesday to allow Robbins to remain out of custody on $5,000 unsecured bail.

Robbins will be remanded into custody and required to pay that amount should he violate his release conditions, which include showing up to all mandatory court hearings and not committing any crimes.

His arraignment hearing is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 19.
