The Centralia Police Department reported Monday that human remains were found in the Chehalis River.

The discovery was made near Mellen Street on Sunday, according to a media release.

“Officers located human remains partially submerged in mud and water in the area described to them by the reporting party,” according to the department.

At about 8 a.m. Monday, Centralia detectives, Washington State Patrol crime scene response team members, Riverside Fire Authority personnel and Lewis County’s chief deputy coroner recovered the human remains.

No identification was found with the human remains, which were sent to a medical examiner’s office, according to the release.

“The cause of death is unknown at this time and further examination will be needed to try and identify who the human remains are,” the department stated. “The Lewis County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased at a later time. No further information will be released at this time.”
