Centralia City Attorney Reminds Residents to Mow Their Lawns

At a Centralia City Council meeting on Tuesday night, City Attorney Shannon Murphy-Olson focused on the issue of tall grass and asked the public to mow their lawns.

Murphy-Olson reminded Centralians that city code has a 1-foot rule for grass height. She also said a city employee had recently given out reminders of the rule to 20 residents.

Murphy-Olson told the councilors beyond being ugly to look at, tall grass presents fire dangers, even without a burn ban currently being in place.

According to Murphy-Olson, the first violation of the tall grass rule “is a civil infraction of no more than $250, second violation (within one year) is a misdemeanor with a financial penalty of not more than $1,000 and third violation (within a year) is a gross misdemeanor not to exceed $5,000.”
