Cardinals Crush Tarriers, 64-12, With Dominant Rushing Attack

Winlock senior tailback Nolan Swofford erupted for 239 yards and five touchdowns on seven carries in just one half of play as the Cardinals thumped visiting Charles Wright Academy, 64-12, in non-league play on Friday.

“We had a fun night,” Winlock coach Ernie Samples said. “They had a hard time stopping us. I thought they looked better on film than they did tonight.”

Winlock quarterback Neal Patching added five carries of 162 yards and two rushing touchdowns as the Cardinals were unstoppable on the ground, led by excellent blocking by the Cardinals’ offensive line.

Winlock racked up 516 total yards of offense, all on the ground, while holding the Tarriers to just 166 yards of offense. Most of the Cardinals damage was done in the first half, when they scored 28 points in the first quarter and 30 in the second before backups went in.

Samples said it was nice to get a game in after last week’s matchup against Taholah was canceled. The Cardinals were supposed to play Northwest Christian (Lacey) this Friday but that game was canceled as well, until Charles Wright stepped in.

Now the Cardinals (3-1, 0-1 league) get a stiff test when they host league rival Mossyrock next Friday.

“Hopefully we come out and play well,” Samples said. “It’s for second place in league.”
