Cardinals Crush Acorns in 69-8 Thumping

There was no Winlock hangover from the Cardinals’ crucial victory over Mossyrock last Friday. The Cardinals went to Oakville this Friday and popped the Acorns for a 69-8 win in 1B Pac-5 action.

Winlock quarterback Neal Patching accounted for four touchdowns, three on the ground and one through the air as the Cardinals found little resistance.

Patching and the Cardinals were unstoppable on the ground once again as they have been all season, with the senior QB rushing six times for 93 yards. Winlock totalled 235 yards on the ground, with Zane Carson adding 110 yards on eight touches.

Senior Nolan Swofford, normally a bruising back, made his impact on the defensive side, taking a pick six 44 yards for the score. Swofford also took the opening kickoff 69 yards to the house.

Payton Sickles added a 67-yard interception return as the Cardinals’ defense held stout.

“Defensively, we had a couple hitches but the guys pulled it together,” Winlock coach Ernie Samples said. “Offensively, they couldn’t do much against us.”

Oakville was led by quarterback Ashton Boyd’s 10 carries for 102 yards.

Winlock is now in sole possession of second place in the conference with two games remaining: Chief Leschi and Ocosta, both winnable games. If the Cardinals win out, they would host a crossover playoff game for the first time since the early 2000s, Samples said.

Winlock (5-1, 2-1 league) travels to Chief Leschi on Friday. Oakville (2-4, 1-3 league) hosts conference-leading Naselle on Friday.
