BOO-coda’s Casket Races Put the ‘Fun’ in Funeral on Saturday

Posted

Bucoda, or BOO-coda during the month of October, claims to be the “World's Tiniest Town with the Biggest Halloween Spirit.”

As one of the many events supporting its claim in the month-long “Spook-tacular” festival, the “Pine Box Derby” draws a crowd each year as teams race caskets, sprinting down the street in front of the Bucoda Town Hall. This year’s derby was held Saturday.

The tradition, like Morton’s Bed Races, requires one racer inside the casket and others pushing it on wheels.

This year’s first place team was three-time champion Joe's Place. Second place was the City of Tenino, and third was Faceless. The Blair Witch Bikers came in “Dead Last.”

The Mayor’s Cup award was given to Tenino Mayor Wayne Fournier and best costume team was won by the City of Olymia.
