TUMWATER – W.F. West’s Aaron Boggess, the top seed in the 2A EvCo singles tournament, lived up to his billing Tuesday, closing out a dominant two-day run with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Centralia’s Jacoby Corwin to take the Sub-District crown.

Boggess, who earned a first-round bye in the tournament, finished with just five games dropped over the course of three matches, beating teammate Will Cummings 6-1, 6-0 in the second round before sweeping Centralia’s Conner O’Dell 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

Boggess’ win capped off another successful Sub-District run for the Bearcats, who won their fifth straight league team title. On the doubles side, Javyn Han and Bryce Kuykendall took second for the Bearcats, falling to Shelton’s Jayden Lovingfoss and Wyatt Wagner, 6-4, 7-5.

Corwin took a more perilous route to the singles final, taking down Black Hills’ Parker Anderson, 6-1, 6-1 in the first round before squeaking past Tumwater’s Drew Johnson, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. He pulled another upset in the semifinal, defeating No. 2 Josh Do of Black Hills in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

Do went on to defeat Tumwater’s Bodie Jackson in the consolation semifinal before beating Drew Johnson in the third-place game Tuesday. Boggess will take the league’s top seed to the District IV tournament next week in Clark County, followed by Corwin, Do, and Johnson, with O’Dell slated as an alternate.

On the doubles side, Han and Kuykendall dropped just six games through the semis, defeating Kycen Donahue and John Kuykendall (Centralia) in the first round, 6-0, 6-1, defeating Brady Walsh and Leighton Gooding (Shelton) in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-0, before another semifinal win over Tanner Brewer and Cody Lambert (Tumwater) 7-5, 6-0.

W.F. West’s second pair of Sam Mittge and Christian Patana pulled off a pair of upsets, defeating Black Hills’ top pair Caleb and Colten Mellum, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, before another win over Aberdeen’s top duo in Mateus Martins and Giovanni Ambrogiani, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. The Bearcats’ doubles team ran out of steam against Lovingfoss and Wagner in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-1, but came back Tuesday to beat another Highclimber duo in the consolation semifinals.

That set up a third-place match with Tumwater’s Max Bunn and Luke Houk. With both teams’ tickets to the district tournament punched, the match was only for seeding, which ended up being a good thing when night fell and shrouded the end of the T-Birds’ 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (3) win.

“They actually finished in the dark,” W.F. West coach Jack State said. “We virtually couldn’t see the ball, but they opted to play the third set out.”

The District IV tournament will take place next Thursday and Friday at Club Green Meadow in Vancouver, with the EvCo’s representatives taking on the best from the 2A GSHL.
