The Black Hills boys and girls wrestling teama both earned trophies at two different tournaments on Saturday, with the boys winning the 50th Annual Jim Bair Invitational Tournament and the girls placing third at the Brody Edwards Memorial Hill Climber Tournament.
It’s the first team trophy that the girls team has won at a tournament in its young history.
“It means a lot,” Black Hills wrestling coach Jason Dick said, while also giving credit to girls coach Steve Kruger. “He’s so proud of them … and I’m very proud of them.”
Sloane Kruger (105) continued to dominate, winning all three of her matches to take first, while Lizzy Grunenfelder (140) and Izzy Steinebach (155) also went unbeaten to win their brackets.
Eden Combs (140) finished second, Isabelle Chernard (170) placed third, and Maddie Payne (170) took fourth.
The boys were victorious in Castle Rock, finishing first in the team scoring even though they had just six top-four finishers. Those who finished outside the top four still won enough matches to put the Wolves over the top of second-place Elma by 4.5 points.
“It was a full team effort,” Dick said. “We had a couple of kids out, and other kids stepped up … We wrestled really well.”
Aiden LaBouff (113) was Black Hills’ lone victor on the day, while Porter Neklason (150) placed second. Jose Fockler (126), Cash Boos (132), and Ammon Combs (175) all took third, while Max Whitehall (285) finished fourth.
