Beavers Lose in Montesano

The Tenino boys soccer team had its short winning streak snapped by the top-ranked squad in the state, falling 4-1 to Montesano in a 1A Evergreen League game.

The Beavers got their goal in the 15th minute, courtesy of Tyler Minerich, who scored off an assist from Alex Reichelderfer.

That goal tied the game up after Montesano took an early lead with an unfortunate own goal. Montesano came away with another goal the more traditional way in the 25th minute, taking a 2-1 lead into halftime.

“I felt like we were in control the first half,” head coach Trevor Fetbrandt said. “That own goal stunk because we went down a goal… but we were definitely the better team.”

Montesano added two more in the second half, making it 3-1 in the 50th minute before converting a penalty kick in the 71st.

“We were just chasing the game,” Fetbrandt said. “We were pushing hard and one touch away from scoring that goal that could have made it competitive.”

Montesano outshot Tenino 27-9, though only eight of the Bulldogs’ cracks were on target. Brock Maurer made five saves in the losing effort.

The Beavers will try to get back on track at home against Raymond on Wednesday.
