Gavin Fugate exploded for four total touchdowns and W.F. West defended its home field in a 38-28 non-league victory over Class 3A Evergreen Friday night.

Fugate was crisp and efficient passing, going 9 for 18 for 179 yards and three scores, and added 12 carries for 78 yards and another score on the ground as the Bearcats’ offense was clicking all night.

“We executed on offense and responded to adversity,” W.F. West coach Dan Hill said.

After committing three first-half turnovers, the Bearcats and Plainsmen were notched at 21-21 at the half. Hill decided to stick with their offensive game plan in the second half but made some tweaks to the defensive line and it worked.

The Bearcats held Evergreen scoreless for 22 minutes and led by 17 points until the Plainsmen scored with two minutes left in the game.

“We talked about zero to zero at halftime,” Hill said. ‘Everything was working on offense. We ran the football well in the second half. Defensively, we made some adjustments.”

Jacob Fuller led the Bearcats in rushing with 21 rushes for 191 yards and a touchdown. The Bearcats ran for 270 yards and threw for 179, while Evergreen rushed for 265 and passed for 101.

Cameron Amoroso reeled in four catches for 83 yards and a score, Charlie Mallonee had a 79-yard TD reception and Gage Brumfield caught a 10-yard touchdown strike. Logan Moore added three catches for 49 yards.

W.F. West improves to 2-1 and heads to Tumwater (2-1) for a 7 p.m. matchup  on Friday.
