Bearcats Fall in Shootout

Eighty minutes and a period of extra time couldn’t separate the W.F. West boys soccer team from Aberdeen in Chehalis on Friday, but the Bobcats got the last laugh, beating the Bearcats 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 tie.

“Their keeper made some really great saves, we had a couple off the crossbar and a post,” WFW coach Allen Anderson said. “We definitely had our opportunities to finish it off tonight, but unfortunately it didn’t fall for us in the end.”

Aberdeen opened the scoring up in the 10th minute, but W.F. West responded before halftime, with Adrian Jaimes converting a penalty kick to level things up at 1-1.

From there, it was a defensive battle, with both teams keeping the sheet clean in the second half, and neither side finding a game-winner in overtime.

Hayden Sciera came away with one save in the shootout, but the Bearcats had one shot saved and another miss the target.

The Bearcats outshot the Bobcats 15-8 on the night.

“The boys played really well tonight,” Anderson said. “I actually thought we were the better team on the field for the majority of the game… I’m really proud of the way our guys played tonight.”

W.F. West will return to play after the weekend with a Tuesday matchup at home against Tumwater.
