The W.F. West volleyball team replaced its bye week with a tough non-league matchup, and ultimately fell to 1A Montesano 25-22, 25-10, 21-25, 18-25, 15-12, nearly pulling off the reverse sweep.

Julia Dalan led the Bearcats from the middle of the net with 10 kills, hitting .563 on the night. Morgan Rogerson added seven kills, Mari Ceesay had six, Chloe Chloupek had five on .444 hitting, and Ava Brenner hit .333 for three.

Savannah Hawkins facilitated everything with 19 assists. Courtney Jones led the defense with 21 digs, and led the Bearcats with four aces, while Ceesay, Rogerson, and Hawkins all had three.

Down one of their starting setters, the Bearcats brought up Alesandra Arceo from the JV team and ran a 5-1 around Hawkins. The switches took a couple sets to settle into, including a rough time in the second, but W.F. West came out of it to take the third and fourth and make a run at it all in the fifth.

“I’m proud of the girls for digging through the adversity, listening to the coaches’ instructions and suggestions, and believing in each other the last three games,'' W.F. West coach Robert Lucas said.

The Bearcats are set to return to 2A EvCo play Thursday with a home match against Rochester.
