Bearcats Drop First Game to Hilanders

In its fourth game against a 3A foe to start the season, the W.F. West softball team dropped its first game to Kelso on the road Monday afternoon in five innings, 15-3.

The Bearcats had a hard time keeping the Hilanders off the board from the get-go, with Kelso scoring in each of the game’s final four innings, including a five-run third and fifth inning.

“They just flat out beat us, that's the best way to put it,” Bearcats coach Kevin Zylstra said. “It just wasn’t our day.”

On the other end, the normally powerful W.F. West bats couldn’t keep up Monday, with the only runs coming from a Lena Fragner 3-run bomb in the fifth inning.

Fragner also robbed a Kelso batter of a couple of RBIs when she made a great catch in center field midway through the game.

The Bearcats will hope to wash the bad taste of the loss out of their mouths before playing in their first league game against rival Tumwater on Wednesday at Rec Park in Chehalis at 6 p.m.
